Mazda CX-5 vs CX-9: Which Mazda SUV is Right for Your Family?

August 31st, 2021 by

Your full-sized family necessitates a full-sized SUV, like the Mazda CX-5 or Mazda CX-9. Both of these SUVs are sharp, fun-to-drive daily autos that are equally at home on city streets as on I-75 and back roads.

Perhaps the most obvious difference between these two vehicles is their sizes – the CX-5 can hold 5, while the CX-9 handles up to 7 – but the contrasts don’t end there. If you’re trying to decide between these two capable crossovers, read on.

Passenger and Cargo Volume

The Mazda CX-5 features plenty of room in its cabin for five passengers, and with available leather-trimmed upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel, it’s sure to be a comfortable ride.

In contrast, the CX-9 is larger, with three rows fitting 7 passengers standard, or you can opt to replace the middle bench with two captain’s chairs, bringing the total capacity to 6. It’s also got more room in the second row than the CX-5, and heated front seats come standard – heated second-row and steering wheel are also options here.

As far as cargo space goes, the CX-9 comes out on top, with 71.2 cubic feet behind its front row (with a full car, you can fit 14.4 cubic feet in the way back). The CX-5, on the other hand, features 59.6 cubic feet behind the front row, and 30.9 behind the second, which is still plenty of space. Both SUVs have a power liftgate available, for those times when your hands are full.

Mazda Technology Keeps You and Your Family Connected

Both the CX-5 and the CX-9 offer newly designed infotainment systems for this year, with HD Radio, two USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the Mazda Connect software on a 10.25-inch touch screen. If you prefer physical buttons to interact with the media features, both Mazdas feature those as well. And you can connect your phone to your car with the integrated Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto®.

In addition to keeping everyone connected, both of these Mazdas excel at keeping you safe with the i-Activsense® suite of technology, including Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support, and more. In fact, both the 2021 Mazda CX-9 and 2021 Mazda CX-5 have received the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, the highest the agency bestows.

Power and Drive

If zooming around the city or down country roads around northern Georgia is more your speed, Mazda has you covered. The CX-9 has the more powerful standard engine, a 2.5L turbo with 227 horsepower, versus the CX-5’s standard four-cylinder pulling 187 horses. The turbo engine is available as an upgrade to the CX-5, however.

Both cars perform about the same when it comes to their handling and ride experience: their taut suspension and sharp steering give a sporty feel to the drive, which many Mazda owners appreciate.

At the end of the day, the biggest difference between these two Mazda crossovers is their size. If you’ve got a bigger family, you might need the space of the CX-9. If your family is still growing, you might want to opt for the smaller, more affordable CX-5. Either way, both SUVs are great choices for families in Athens, Johns Creek, Stone Mountain, and Atlanta.
